Signs your carpet has water damage
Carpet that squishes underfoot is obvious. The less obvious signs are a damp or cool feel in one area, a musty smell, ripples, or a dark edge along a wall.
- Water that surfaces when you press down with a shoe or a hand
- A cool, clammy patch, often along one wall or near a doorway
- Darkened or discolored areas, or brown wicking stains as the carpet dries
- Ripples and buckling where the carpet has loosened
- A sour or musty odor a day or two after a leak
- Rust marks or wood stain rings around furniture legs
- Carpet pulling away from the tack strip at the wall
- Backing that crackles or separates from the face yarn (delamination)
When wet carpet can be saved and when it can't
| Situation | Carpet | Pad |
|---|---|---|
| Clean water, wet less than a day or two | Usually saved | Usually replaced |
| Appliance discharge or other gray water | Sometimes saved with thorough cleaning | Replaced |
| Sewage or outdoor floodwater | Removed | Removed |
| Any water, wet for several days | Usually removed | Removed |
| Backing delaminated or visible mold | Removed | Removed |
Age matters too. Spending money to dry 15-year-old carpet that was due for replacement rarely makes sense, and we'll say so.
What carpet restoration involves
Identify the water and map the wet area
The source decides whether restoration is an option. Meters then show how far water traveled under the carpet, which is usually farther than it looks.
Extract
Weighted extraction tools press water out of the carpet and pad while vacuuming. See water extraction.
Detach the carpet and remove the pad
The carpet is released from the tack strip and folded back. Wet pad is cut out and bagged.
Dry the subfloor and the carpet
Air movers are positioned to move air across the subfloor and under the carpet, with dehumidifiers pulling moisture from the room. Baseboards and the bottom of the drywall are checked and dried too.
Install new pad and reinstall
Once the subfloor reads dry, new pad goes down, and the carpet is re-stretched and trimmed. Rusted or damaged tack strip is replaced.
Clean
The carpet is cleaned with hot water extraction to remove soil and any residue the water carried in.
Carpet over concrete, over wood, and glued down
Over a wood subfloor. The subfloor absorbs water and has to be dried to protect it from swelling and mold. If there's a crawl space below, the insulation under the floor may be wet as well.
Over a concrete slab. Common in basements. Concrete isn't harmed, but it releases moisture slowly, and pad over a damp slab will smell.
Glue-down carpet. Found in some basements and most offices. It has no pad and can't be lifted without destroying it, so it's dried in place from the top. Prolonged wetting can release the adhesive. See commercial water damage restoration.
Area rugs. Wool and handmade rugs need to be taken off the floor and dried flat promptly. Dyes can bleed into the carpet or flooring beneath.
Red clay and carpet in Winston-Salem
The soil across Forsyth County is red Piedmont clay, and it's one of the hardest stains there's to remove from carpet. That matters whenever water comes in from outside: through a basement door in a downpour, under a garage wall, or in from a flooded crawl space access. The water carries fine red clay with it, and as the carpet dries the iron-rich particles lock into the fibers and leave a rust-orange stain.
Runoff is also treated as contaminated water. So for light-colored carpet that has taken muddy water from outdoors here, replacement is usually the realistic outcome, and the effort is better spent drying the slab and walls properly.
What affects the cost of wet carpet restoration
Cost depends on the square footage, how many rooms are involved, whether pad is replaced, how much furniture has to be moved, and the water category.
- Area. One bedroom versus a whole level.
- Pad replacement. Removing, disposing of, and installing new pad.
- Furniture. Fully furnished rooms take longer than empty ones.
- Drying days. Wood subfloors and wet walls add equipment time.
- Stairs and closets. Carpeted stairs and many small closets are slower to detach and reinstall.
- Cleaning and odor treatment. Gray water needs more than a standard cleaning.
- Replacement. If the carpet can't be saved, removal and disposal are part of the scope, and new carpet is a separate cost.
When wet carpet is urgent
Call right away if a large area is soaked, if the carpet is on an upper floor and water may be reaching the ceiling below, if the water came from a drain or from outside, or if it has already been wet for a day. Small clean spills that you have blotted and can feel drying don't need a crew.
Keep children and pets off carpet that was wet with anything other than clean water until it has been dealt with.
After the carpet is dry
For the next few weeks, pay attention to odor, especially on humid days, and to any new ripples or discoloration. A smell that returns means moisture remains in the pad, subfloor, or wall and should be rechecked before it becomes a mold problem. If baseboards or drywall were removed, those are put back as part of water damage repair.

Wet carpet questions
How long can carpet stay wet before it's ruined?
With clean water, there's a good chance of saving carpet that is extracted and under drying equipment within about 24 to 48 hours. After that, odor, mold, and separation of the backing become increasingly likely.
Does the pad always have to be replaced?
Usually. Pad is a thick sponge that holds far more water than the carpet and is slow to dry in place. It's inexpensive compared with carpet, so replacing it's normally the faster and safer choice. A small area of clean water caught immediately can sometimes be extracted and dried without removing pad.
Will my carpet smell after it dries?
Carpet that was wet with clean water and dried promptly shouldn't smell once it has been cleaned. A lingering musty or sour odor means something underneath stayed wet, or the water wasn't clean.
Can I just rent a carpet cleaner and fans?
A rental machine removes some water from the face of the carpet and very little from the pad. Household fans dry the top while the pad and subfloor stay wet. That approach works only for small spills.
Why does the carpet look loose or rippled after drying?
Carpet relaxes when it gets wet and when it's detached for drying. It's re-stretched onto the tack strip with a power stretcher as part of reinstallation.
